What inspired you to start your business?

Our family motto is “What the HECK” inspired by the film Risky Business. We had a terrible experience as a part of a large corporate business and so when we started up HECK we dusted ourselves off, said what the HECK and created a great family business.

What has been your biggest challenge?

As a start-up with high input costs, supplier credit was a problem in our first year. But we have worked with our retail partners to arrange fast payments, which has been hugely beneficial to aid cash flow.

What has been your best business decision?

Building a great brand based on understanding the consumer, and investing in our people in the business.

What has been your worst business decision?

Looking at our competitors for ideas, which really muddies the water. We simply look forward, not over our shoulders

Which business leader would you most like to share a meal with, and why?

Richard Branson, as he believes in investing in his people and he’s fun, so it would be a lively and boozy few hours.

What company do you most admire, and why?

Tesco. They went through a really bad patch but have totally transformed themselves, not only in terms of profit, but by keeping a seam of entrepreneurial flair through all their buying team to deliver an improved shopper experience.
